Making friends beyond campus

Uni life is a rollercoaster ride filled with opportunities, and one of the best ones is connecting with the local community. For international students, it's a chance to make friends beyond the uni bubble and truly embrace the culture of your new home. Here, some of us recall what we did during our first few years in Adelaide as an international student and talk about how you can dive into the local scene and build meaningful connections outside of campus.

Step into the local world

  1. Exploration time: Start by exploring the area around your college. Go for walks, visit nearby parks, and check out local cafes, markets, and stores. You'll get to know your surroundings and might bump into some friendly faces.
  2. Language exchange: If you're learning a new language, consider a language exchange. Many local folks are eager to practice English and share their language with you. It's a fun way to learn and make friends.
  3. Attend local events: Keep an eye out for local events, from cultural festivals to community gatherings. These are great opportunities to meet people who are passionate about the same things you are.
  4. Volunteer: Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back to your new community while making friends who share your interests. Check out local charities, non-profits, and events where you can lend a hand.

Join clubs and groups

  1. Sports clubs: If you're into sports, consider joining a local sports club or league. Whether it's soccer, basketball, or something less common, you'll meet like-minded people.
  2. Hobby clubs: Find clubs or groups related to your hobbies. Whether it's painting, cooking, or dancing, there's usually something for everyone.
  3. Book clubs: If you love reading, look for book clubs at local libraries or bookstores. You'll discuss your favorite books and meet fellow bookworms.
  4. Outdoor adventures: Join hiking, cycling, or other outdoor adventure groups. It's a great way to explore the area and make friends who love nature.

Stay safe and trust your instincts

While making new friends is fantastic, always trust your instincts and prioritise your safety. Meet people in public places, share your plans with someone you trust, and be cautious when sharing personal information.

Remember, connecting with the local community is an incredible opportunity for personal growth and an enriching part of your college experience. So, put yourself out there, be open to new experiences, and build friendships that will last a lifetime!
