The Power of Personality Profiling

For leaders, understanding and knowing how to manage different personality types at work is vital for creating high-performing teams.

One way to achieve this is by using 鈥榩ersonality profiling鈥 tools, which can help organisations learn more about their employees; including personal attributes, values, life skills and communication styles.

For more than 25 years, Tanya Perry has been working with organisations to harness the power of personality profiling.
On a recent episode of Levelling up: Your leadership podcast, Tanya shared the methodology behind her preferred personality profiling tool, and how it can help leaders become more effective communicators.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really about understanding human nature a bit better,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 prefer to approach profiling from the perspective of first having a better understanding of our own communication preferences, and then moving to understanding the preferences of others.鈥

Finding your avian alter-ego

When working with her clients, Tanya uses former 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide Alum Des Hunt鈥檚 internationally-recognised profiling tool, 鈥鈥.

After completing a 10-12-minute questionnaire (which can be , or in ), users are placed in one of four distinct quadrants, which are named after different species of bird: the peacock, dove, eagle and owl.

The horizontal axis measures extroversion through to introversion, while the vertical axis measures whether you鈥檙e a 鈥榩eople-focused person鈥, or a 鈥榯ask-focused person鈥.

But while each of us fit within a quadrant, Tanya stresses that the Tick test is not about 鈥減utting someone in a box鈥. 听

鈥淒es makes it very clear in his book that we fit across all four of the quadrants; but we just have preferences we feel more comfortable with,鈥 she said.

The four personality 鈥榯ypes鈥 identified by Des include:

The Peacocks: People-focused extroverts

鈥淭hese are the people who love to chat, they鈥檙e enthusiastic, you know when they鈥檙e in the building,鈥 Tanya said.

鈥淭he peacocks are the people who really are front and centre 鈥 they like to talk to other people, and they feel very comfortable doing it.鈥

The Doves: People-focused introverts

鈥淒oves are the carers on the team鈥hey care about other people, and they have concern for others,鈥 Tanya said. 听

鈥淭hey鈥檒l remember if you鈥檝e got a relative who鈥檚 not very well, and they鈥檒l ask you how they are.鈥

The Eagles: Task-focused extroverts

鈥淓agles are the big picture thinkers鈥hese people are not keen on detail, or too much chat 鈥 they like to get things done,鈥 Tanya said.

The Owls: Task-focused introverts

鈥淭hese are our details-focused people on the team. They dot every 鈥榠鈥, cross every 鈥榯鈥, they know where everything is and they鈥檙e very organised,鈥 Tanya said.

Adapting your leadership style

According to Tanya, knowing your own and your colleague鈥檚 avian alter-ego can help you to communicate with people who don鈥檛 think and communicate like you do 鈥 which delivers powerful benefits.

鈥淗is [Des鈥橾 book is about showing us how we can reach out to the other styles, so we communicate really powerfully with those people too,鈥 she said. 鈥淐ommunicating with another person in a way that helps them to feel at ease with you can yield enormous business for every leader.鈥

There are many ways to do this, Tanya said.

鈥淗ow about you try asking a dove how they are, and listen to the answer, before you start listing off your needs.

鈥淥r, what about providing data to an owl鈥nd even going so far as to make an appointment with them before appearing at their door asking 鈥榟ave you got a minute鈥 鈥 owls are never fond of that; they like to be organised and prepared so they can give you their full concentration.

鈥淧eacocks need to feel involved and excited about what you鈥檙e asking of them鈥nd with an eagle 鈥 just get to the point. No small talk, they鈥檙e ready to go!鈥

Another benefit of understanding the communications preferences of others is that it can provide you with confidence and practical guidance on the best way to approach difficult conversations and provide feedback.

鈥淚t shows you how to communicate confidently even when you鈥檙e under pressure,鈥 Tanya said.

鈥淪o, having challenging conversations and negotiations also become a bit easier鈥y adjusting your style, you can help them to listen to what you have to say and the improvements you need them to make.鈥
