Sir George Murray was born in Magill, Adelaide in 1863 and was educated at St Peter's College. At the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Adelaide he won the John Howard Clark Scholarship for English Literature in 1882 and qualified for the B.A. degree in 1883. He took his B.A. and LL.B. degrees at the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Cambridge. He returned to South ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog and was associate to Sir Samuel Way until 1891, when he began practising as a barrister.Ìý He had been on the Council of the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Adelaide since 1891, and in 1915 was appointed Vice-Chancellor. In 1916 he became Chancellor of the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog. Sir George was created K.C.M.G. in 1917.

Sir George gave generously to the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog and his benefactions included:-

ÌýÌýÌý 1907 - £1,000 to establish a scholarship called ‘The Tinline Scholarship’ in memory of his mother's family
ÌýÌýÌý 1920 - £1,000 for the building fund of the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog
ÌýÌýÌý 1931 - £2,000 for general purposes
ÌýÌýÌý 1936 - £10,000 for a men's union building
ÌýÌýÌý 1936 - He renounced his life interest in the estate of his sister, Margaret which amounted to about £53,000.
ÌýÌýÌý 1942 - £86,000 (approx) bequest for general purposes.Ìý Use of the bequests was in each case left to the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog Council.Ìý The final decision was to amalgamate them and use the income to provide scholarships and travel grants for study overseas without restriction as to the field of study in which and for which awards might be made.

The funds Sir George provided in 1936 also allowed the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog to build what is now known as the Sir George Murray building on the North Terrace Campus.
