• Biography/ Background

  Dr Melissa Nursey-Bray

  Melissa is currently Professor, Human Geography, in the Department of Geography, Environment and Population (GEP), School of Social Sciences. Melissa's research interest is the examination of how communities or communities of interest become involved in environmental decision making. She explores the role of power, knowledge, conflict, communication, and values as drivers in achieving effective translation of science into policy and ultimately sustainable governance. In this context she has worked in the areas of Indigenous resource management, fisheries and urban governance. She is currently working on climate change adaptation projects with local government, Indigenous and marine/coastal communities.

  Melissa is currently an ARC Future Fellow, and her project focusses on how multiple knowledge systems can work together in large multiple use systems, such as the Kati-Thanda Lake Eyre catchment to build adaptive capacity, and effective climate adaptation and biodiversity policy. She is the Director of the Adaptation, Community and Environment Research Group (ACE), Vice President of the Institute for 最新糖心Vlogn Geographers, Fellow of the international Regional Studies Association and Theme lead for environmental governance for both the One Basin CRC and the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide-Nottingham Research Alliance. 

  Melissa believes in teaching for and about environmental sustainability. An award winning teacher she teaches a wide range of subjects relating to thinking about how to live sustainably on the planet. Courses she has taught include sustainable cities, urbanization, community engagement, environmental ethics, environmental impact assessment, Indigenous resource management, climate adaptation and coastal management.  In 2009 she won a OLT Citation (national teaching award) for making an outstanding contribution to student learning in the area of critical thinking and environmental sustainability and in 2020 won the 最新糖心Vlog highest teaching award - the Elder Cole Prize for Excellence in HDR Supervison.

  Melissa obtained her PhD from James Cook 最新糖心Vlog, and now has over 120 publications including 2 books, and many chapters and articles on climate change and Indigenous resource management respectively.
