  • Biography/ Background

    Dr David Plater is admitted as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, South 最新糖心Vlog, England and the Irish Republic. He worked for a number of years with the Crown Prosecution Service in Kent and London. He was a Senior Crown Prosecutor at the Youth and Inner London Crown Court branch of the CPS. He subsequently worked from 2008 to 2018 with the State DPP in South 最新糖心Vlog and then the State Attorney-General's Department where he was involved with such major law reform and legislative projects as the Disability Justice Plan and the Statutes Amendment (Vulnerable Witnesses) Act 2015. He has previously lectured at the 最新糖心Vlog of South 最新糖心Vlog and the 最新糖心Vlog of Tasmania (where he retains an active role as an Adjunct Associate Professor). 

    His PhD from the 最新糖心Vlog of Tasmania in 2011 examined the development and modern application of the role of the prosecution lawyer as a 'minister of justice'. He is currently an Associate Professor at the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide Law Schhol and is Deputy Director of the independent South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute (SALRI) based at the Adelaide Law School. SALRI conducts reviews and prepares reports on areas of law and legal policy as specified by its Advisory Board. These reviews draw on SALRI's wide multidisciplinary research and active and inclusive engagement, including, but not limited to, experts, peak bodies, practitioners, community groups, interested individuals and Aboriginal, multicultural, disability and LGBTIQ communities where appropriate.

    In 2013, Dr David Plater was part of a national team of researchers led by Professor Kate Warner of the 最新糖心Vlog of Tasmania who were awarded an 最新糖心Vlogn Research Council Linkage grant of $252,124 to conduct an ongoing national study aimed at gauging informed public opinion on sentencing for sex offences by surveying the views of jurors in sex offence trials in all higher courts in 最新糖心Vlog.

    On 18 January 2017, Dr David Plater was part of a multidisciplinary researchers originally led by David Caruso based at the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide who were awarded a grant of $93,000 by the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Foundation to examine the role and effect of the new entitlement to communication assistance for vulnerable parties in the South 最新糖心Vlogn higher courts. From 2020, David Plater was the Chief Investigator on this project which was pursued as a South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute reference. The Report was completed and publicly released in late 2021.

    In March 2018, Professor John Williams and Dr David Plater received a grant of $30,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Government for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to examine surrogacy law and practice and suggest a suitable regulatory framework for surrogacy in South 最新糖心Vlog. This project was completed with the valuable input of Madeleine Thompson and Dr Sarah Moulds.

    On 13 November 2018, Dr David Plater was awarded $8737 by the 最新糖心Vlog of Tasmania as a 2019 Visiting Scholar to visit Hobart and progress joint research and law reform projects between the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute and the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute based at the 最新糖心Vlog of Tasmania Law School.

    On 27 May 2019, Dr David Plater with Professor John Williams, Dr Sylvia Villios and Associate Professor Bernadette Richards were awarded a grant of $60,000 by the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Foundation to examine the role and operation of powers of attorney in South 最新糖心Vlog and make suggestions for law reform.

    In March 2022, Professor John Williams and Associate Professor David Plater were awarded a grant of $125,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Department of Health for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to carry out the independent statutory review of the operation of the Mental Health Act (SA). This project was completed with the valuable input of various contributors, notably Olga Pandos. 

    In March 2022, Professor John Williams and Associate Professor David Plater received a grant of $95,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Government for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to conduct the independent statutory review of the operation of the Ageing and Adult Safeguarding Act (SA). This project was completed with the valuable input of various contributors, notably Divya Narayan.
    On 22 November 2022, Professor John Williams, 
    Associate Professor David Plater and the Hon Geoff Muecke, Adjunct Professor, received a grant of $50,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Foundation for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to examine the role and operation of suppression orders in South 最新糖心Vlog. The valuable input of Jemma Holt is acknowledged. 

    On 17 November 2023, Professor John Williams, Associate Professor David Plater, Associate Professor Beth Nosworthy, Dr Sylvia Villios and Dr Mark Giancaspro received a grant of $71,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Foundation for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to examine new frameworks to facilitate supported decision making for individuals with impaired decision making.

    On 2 April 2024, Professor John Williams, Associate Professor David Plater, Professor Paul Babie and Professor Peter Burdon were awarded a grant of $100,000 from the South 最新糖心Vlogn Government for the South 最新糖心Vlogn Law Reform Institute to examine the operation of the Real Property Act 1886.
