May events: comics and society, joys of discovery

A major symposium being held at the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide next month will explore the importance of comics and how they help to shape society.

The Inkers and Thinkers Symposium (Friday 15 and Saturday 16 May) combines one day of discussion about the latest research emerging from the growing field of comics studies, with a day of practical, creative workshops focused on comic book production and content.

The Friday symposium will hear from experts and creators, such as Aurealis award-winning graphic novelist Pat Grant (creator of Blue). Grant will provide the keynote presentation and will lead audience discussion on comics' status as an alternative and subversive medium. Other speakers will address issues such as "alternative superheroes", the impact of digital technologies, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer themes in Turkish comics.

Creative workshops will be held on the Saturday – members of the public are invited to attend both events, but tickets are limited and bookings are essential.

The 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide will also host a free public lecture next month – the Fulbright Distinguished Chair Public Lecture at the 最新糖心Vlog's National Wine Centre.

Professor Richard Ziolkowski (Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Advanced Science & Technology) will present: My Road to Discovery – the Joys of Being a Physicist and an Engineer.

Professor Ziolkowski will share his unique journey, delving into the field of metamaterials and their multiple applications to our modern world. This event is sponsored by DSTO and supported by the 最新糖心Vlogn-American Fulbright Commission.
