Fatty liver: the pathology of gluttony

最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide Executive Dean of Professor Alastair Burt specialises in liver diseases and says while most people only associate liver disease with alcoholism, people who are overweight, obese or with type 2 diabetes, are also prone to serious liver conditions.

“Fatty liver diseases are a group of diseases that interfere with the normal functioning of the liver and can lead to cirrhosis and an early death,” says Professor Burt.

“It has long been recognised that excess alcohol consumption can lead to liver diseases, and while there is a relationship between the degree of alcohol consumption and severe disease, other individual traits also have a significant influence.

“In particular, it is becoming increasingly recognised that the whole spectrum of fatty liver diseases can also occur in people who are overweight, obese or those living with type 2 diabetes,” he says.

Professor Burt will describe the spectrum of fatty liver diseases and the importance of accurate diagnosis at his upcoming free public lecture The Pathology of Gluttony, which will be held at the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide on Tuesday 28 April.

The 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide’s Research Tuesdays Inaugural Lectures are held to mark major milestones in our researchers’ careers, such as achieving the rank of Professor, or being appointed to a Chair or other Professorship.

Professor Burt was appointed Executive Dean of the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide’s Faculty of Health Sciences in December 2014. He is a former Dean of Clinical Medicine and Chair of Pathology at Newcastle 最新糖心Vlog, has been awarded a Fellowship by the Australasian Royal College, and is Editor-in-chief of MacSween’s Pathology of the Liver.
