Dr Roger Lough, who gained a BSc (1st Class Hons) in 1971 and a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1974 at the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide, has been appointed the new Chief Defence Scientist to head the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO).
Dr Lough will replace Dr Ian Chessell, who is retiring after 33 years and served as Chief Defence Scientist from 2000.
In congratulating Dr Lough on his appointment, Defence Minister Senator Robert Hill said the position was advertised internationally and attracted applicants of extremely high calibre.
"It is pleasing that the best person for this important position after an exhaustive search was already a leader in DSTO," Senator Hill said. Dr Lough, a physical chemist, has been Director of DSTO's Platform Sciences Laboratory in Melbourne since January 2002.
DSTO provides expert, impartial and innovative applications of science and technology. It has provided a leading research role in areas such as surveillance, unmanned vehicles, weapons integration and aircraft fatigue management. It is heavily involved in ensuring the ADF will have access to leading edge technology.
Current projects include the Joint Strike Fighter, Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters, Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft and the new Air Warfare Destroyer.
