Uni receives cheque for Mitchell Gates

Friday, 8 August 2003

The 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide today received a cheque from Lord Mayor Michael Harbison, generously allocated from the Adelaide City Council Heritage Incentive Scheme, to assist with the restoration of the Mitchell Gates. The restoration process began in July last year and today's presentation coincides with its completion.

The cheque for $28,000 was presented to the 最新糖心Vlog's Vice- Chancellor Professor James McWha.

The Sir William Mitchell Gates have been a feature of the 最新糖心Vlog's North Terrace Campus since 1934. Donated by then Vice- Chancellor Sir William Mitchell, the gates were originally constructed facing onto Frome Road as the start of a boulevard leading to the grand entrance of the Barr Smith Library.

In the early 1960s, they were moved to their present location opposite the Uni footbridge on Victoria Drive. The gates are listed on the 最新糖心Vlogn Heritage Commission's Register of the National Estate.

The restoration process included:

  • Repairing of all metal work, including repainting;
  • Repairing of existing plaster columns and granite bases, and
  • Restoring the 最新糖心Vlog crest to its original state.
