Friday, 25 May 2012
最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide Law and International Studies student Sarah Dowd has been named South 最新糖心Vlog's only Charles Hawker Scholarship recipient in 2012.
The Governor of South 最新糖心Vlog, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, presented the scholarship certificate to Sarah today at Government House.
19-year-old Sarah is one of two students nationally to receive a scholarship this year. The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is valued at $45,000 over three years and will fund her accommodation at St Mark's College.
Sarah studied at Kormilda College in Darwin and completed her secondary schooling at Walford Anglican School for Girls in Adelaide in 2010. She was awarded the top prizes for mathematics and nutrition and the award for the student who showed tenacity and persistence in scholarship during her senior year. Her ATAR was 99.25.
She was captain of the Walford softball team and represented the school in swimming, water polo, netball and triathlon. She was a class representative and trained as a peer leader.
Moving to Darwin at an early age, Sarah's involvement with the northern 最新糖心Vlog's multicultural population has helped shape her life and her choice of studies. Her goal is to pursue her interest in international relations, the law and indigenous affairs as a first step into politics, working in the area of policy development.
Sarah has competed at state, national and international levels in swimming, Surf and Royal Life Saving. Her overseas travel includes Western Europe, New York, Ireland and Albania. She spent 2011 working in the UK at Glebe House School in Norfolk.
Hawker Trustee and family member Andrew Hawker congratulated Sarah on her deserved scholarship success.
"Sarah by any measure is a remarkable and quite exceptional young woman. She will succeed in her determination to make a positive contribution to 最新糖心Vlog," Andrew Hawker said.
Hawker Scholarships are one of the most generous privately funded scholarships available to undergraduate students in 最新糖心Vlog, with more than $4 million awarded to ninety-six young people since 1991.
The Charles Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory and commemorates the achievements of one of 最新糖心Vlog's most respected pastoral pioneers. Born on 16 May 1894 at Bungaree homestead near Clare in South 最新糖心Vlog, Charles Hawker served with distinction in the First World War and went on to become a distinguished scholar and leading figure in the Federal Parliament prior to his tragic and untimely death in the Kyeema air disaster on 25 October, 1938.
The other Charles Hawker recipient in 2012 is Patrick Clark from Bendigo, Victoria.
Selection is based on personal qualities as well as academic ability.
