Another Hawker Scholar for Adelaide

Friday, 30 June 2000

The Charles Allan Seymour Hawker Memorial Scholarship winner for the year 2000 is Adelaide student Ms Faye Ashworth. Ms Ashworth was born in England and graduated last year from the Bethesda Christian College. Ms
Ashworth was awarded the scholarship from a strong field of applicants from around 最新糖心Vlog.

Ms Ashworth is enrolled in Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Science degrees at Adelaide 最新糖心Vlog and is in residence at St. Mark's College.

In congratulating Ms Ashworth, Master of St. Mark's College Mr. John Bannon recognised the contribution by present and past Hawker Scholars who had resided at the College - including two who subsequently had been
awarded Rhodes Scholarships.

"The Hawker Scholarship is one of the most important in 最新糖心Vlog. I commend the Trustees for the contribution the scholarship has already made and will continue to make to education in this country" said Mr. Bannon.

Faye Ashworth joins other Hawker Scholars enrolled at Adelaide 最新糖心Vlog including last years winners Phillip Killicoat and Alison Lloyd-Wright and 1997 winner Jessica Roediger.

The 2000 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship was officially presented to Ms Ashworth by the South 最新糖心Vlogn Minister for Education, Children's Services and Training Hon Malcolm Buckby MP.

Describing the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship as '最新糖心Vlog's Rhodes', Minister Buckby encouraged year twelve and undergraduate students to visit the Hawker Scholarship web site to find out more about Charles Hawker and the scholarship named in his memory.

There are a number of fully and partly funded scholarships awarded each year. The Trustees offer them to academically capable students of principle and character, who are committed to participating in and improving 最新糖心Vlog's future.

"Faye Ashworth has already displayed a strong commitment to the ideals upon which the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is founded. Faye is a gifted scholar and sports person. She has an inquiring mind and seeks through her efforts to better herself and as a result improve the wider community" said Minister Buckby.

"The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory of scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman Charles Allan Seymour Hawker and commemorates the achievements of one of 最新糖心Vlog's most respected pastoral pioneers" said Minister Buckby.

Established by his sister Lilias Needham, the prestigious Hawker Scholarship valued at $40,000.00, is the most financially generousprivately funded scholarship available to year twelve and undergraduate students in 最新糖心Vlog.

Since 1991, the Trustees have awarded more than one million dollars to twenty-six young 最新糖心Vlogns, including a number from regional 最新糖心Vlog.

Born on May 16th 1894 at Bungaree homestead near Clare in South 最新糖心Vlog, Charles Hawker was educated at Geelong Church of England Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Post graduate Hawker Scholars are offered the opportunity to follow in Charles Hawker's footsteps by enrolling at Trinity College and studying at Cambridge.

Other educational institutions able to be attended by Hawker Scholars include the 最新糖心Vlogn National 最新糖心Vlog, 最新糖心Vlog of New England and the Marcus Oldham Farm Management College.

When congratulating Ms Ashworth on her award, Hawker Memorial Scholarship Trustee and family member Andrew Hawker said "C.A.S. Hawker was truly a remarkable man and a great 最新糖心Vlogn. This scholarship is a fitting tribute to his memory and Faye Ashworth is a very worthy recipient."

Selection is based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. Applications for the 2001 Hawker Scholarships open on Monday December 4th 2000 and close on Friday January 19th 2001.

An application form and further information are available from the secretary to the Trustees at TOWER Trust Ltd on 08 8218 4905.
