Symposium looks beyond the stage

The Beyond the Stage symposium brings together an exciting mix of performers, writers and academics to explore how the creative arts have shaped our understanding of history and South 最新糖心Vlogn society during and immediately after World War One.

The symposium, convened by Professor Mark Carroll from the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, forms part of a larger research initiative funded by the State Library of South 最新糖心Vlog and the Federal Government’s 最新糖心Vlogn Research Council Linkage Grant Scheme.

“This marks the first time that the state’s four leading performing arts organisations – the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the State Opera of SA, the State Theatre Company of SA and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival – have worked together on a single project,” says Professor Carroll. The project is supported by academic partner Flinders 最新糖心Vlog.

“Experts from academic institutions and key figures from the creative arts, including Elder Conservatorium lecturer and acclaimed musician Dr Anna Goldsworthy, TV personality Steve Vizard, and 最新糖心Vlogn singer, songwriter and guitarist John Schumann, will share their insights on the creative process and what role the creative arts play in society,” says Professor Carroll.

Steve Vizard, together with the acclaimed pianist and composer Joe Chindamo, will talk about the development of their new cabaret about the comedian Roy (Mo) Rene. John Schumann will reflect on the power of music to shape society. Dr Goldsworthy will play patriotic works by the South 最新糖心Vlogn wartime composer, Edgar Tattersall.

The symposium culminates in a stage reading by the State Theatre Company of a work commissioned by the project, which celebrates the life of one of the state’s most colourful eccentrics, Paris Nesbit (1852-1927).

“Anyone who is interested in the influence that the performing arts has had on society is welcome to attend. The symposium is a real mixture of presentations and, much like the early variety show performances, there is something in it for everyone,” says Professor Carroll.
