You will attend lectures and participate in interactive workshop-based sessions led by internationally acclaimed writers, in the process acquiring skills to assist you in developing your writing practice.

As a creative writing student, you will:

  • Become a more skilful and adaptable writer;
  • Create portfolios of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and work for screen;
  • Study techniques for working in a range of literary forms and genres;
  • Develop and sustain critically reflective and theoretically informed writing practices;
  • Improve your revision and editing proficiency;
  • Gain access to the activities of the J.M. Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice.

The Department of English, Creative Writing, and Film has long been recognised for excellence in learning and teaching. You will have the opportunity to learn from established creative writers including Prof. Patrick Flanery (Absolution, I Am No One, The Ginger Child), Dr Matthew Hooton (Deloume Road, Typhoon Kingdom), Dr Bronwyn Law-Viljoen (The Printmaker, Notes on Falling), and Georgia Phillips (The Bearcat [forthcoming]).

Nobel Laureate and double Booker Prize-winning author Prof. J.M. Coetzee (Life & Times of Michael K, Disgrace, Elizabeth Costello, The Childhood of Jesus) is associated with the Department, as are acclaimed writers Brian Castro, Jill Jones, and Nicholas Jose.

Recent and upcoming visitors to the Department include: Nam Le, Hoa Nguyen, Robert Sullivan, Anna Jackson, Carol Lefevre, Stephen Muecke, Keston Sutherland, and Juliana Spahr. The innovative independent digital literary journal The Saltbush Review was founded and is edited by Creative Writing postgraduate students Lyn Dickens and Gemma Parker, in affiliation with the J.M. Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice.
