He highlighted several historical incidents, including a famine (Holodomor) caused by Stalin’s policy of collectivization, the annexation of western Ukraine in 1939-1944, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014 and the Minsk Accords, that have set the stage for today’s conflict.
The Ambassador also touched upon the geopolitical effects of the current conflict, highlighting three sectors that are likely to be heavily impacted: energy, food, migration and regional stability.
He reiterated that the situation in Ukraine is very dire and the outlook grim, stating: ’If the Russians stop fighting, it is the end of the war. If the Ukrainians stop fighting; it is the end of Ukraine’.
