Exciting developments are underway at Century Orchards in Loxton, where a new reverse-osmosis (RO) plant has been installed to explore sustainable groundwater use. This project aims to relieve pressure on the Murray River while harnessing the significant potential of underground water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin.

With an estimated 2000GL of groundwater available for sustainable extraction, this initiative focuses on:

• Developing an online resource and cost calculator for assessing the viability of using marginal quality groundwater for irrigation.
• Conducting a pilot case study on the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of brackish groundwater use.
• Synthesizing brine disposal options linked to enhanced groundwater utilization.
• Identifying future research and commercialization priorities to support sustainable water practices.

Led by ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Adelaide’s, Michael Leonard, and supported by industry leaders, this project promises to transform water management in the region, enhancing resilience for local farmers and protecting our precious freshwater resources.
