STEM 3700 - STEM Internship

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2025

This internship course will allow you to build and apply your broad, personal skills relevant to workplace settings, both within and beyond the discipline-specific skills acquired throughout your undergraduate course work. Training will be provided in career development skills and employability. Included within the course are opportunities for you to produce original work which strengthens and demonstrates your analytical, research and problem-solving skills; graduate-ready qualities that are essential for future employment. You will develop an understanding of the value of industry and professional networks and the importance of reflection, lifelong learning to career progression. The internship component will directly add to your experiences and resume while consolidating your confidence and the ability to contribute to a workplace. You will gain an awareness of the strengths you offer to a future employer. Through the internship, you will focus on developing and enhancing your employability skills, knowledge, experience and attributes that are valuable in professional settings within industries connected to your field of studies.

    All course resources will be provided through MyUni. This includes supporting materials to prepare students for the work placement including resources focusing on professional preparation, supporting resources for the internship, assignment information and submission, and announcements.
  • Learning & Teaching Activities
    Learning & Teaching Modes
    The student will undertake 140hrs of work within an industry partner of their choice. In addition, the student will produce the following pieces of assessment:

    1) A short video introducing themselves, the project that will be undertaken during the work placement, and what they are hoping to learn from the experience.

    2) A technical report or presentation (if required to complete this as part of their project), a portfolio (ARCH, LARCH and CONMGNT students) OR a diary of tasks undertaken.

    3) Personal reflection outlining the non-technical skills acquired during the placement and how the experience has impacted on them and their intended career.

    The supervisor from the host organisation will also be asked to provide feedback on the student. This will be managed by the internship team and does not require input form the student. Where approved by the host, this feedback will be provided to the student through MyUni.
    Workload

    The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

    A student enrolled in a 3 unit course, such as this, should expect to spend a total of 150 hours on the studies required. This includes both the formal contact time required to the course (e.g. approx 140hrs work placement), as well as non-contact time
    (e.g. 10hrs for preparation for placement and completing the required assessments).
    Learning Activities Summary
    The STEM internship course will be an excellent opportunity for students to strengthen and build employability skills such as communication, time management, problem solving and resilience. Self-directed online activities and this first assessment task, an introductory video, will assist students in preparing for their work placement. During the work placement students will prepare either a technical report, portfolio or diary (depending on their discipline) and finally students prepare and submit a personal reflection once their 140hrs of work placement is complete. This course is largely a self-directed and self-managed work integrated learning experience.
    Specific Course Requirements
    Students must apply for a suitable internship as advertised on Career Hub or organise their own work placement and contact the internship team for assistance in establish the placement.

    Assessment Related Requirements
    All assessment items must be completed and submitted through MyUni to acheive the NGP.
    Assessment Detail
    The student will undertake approx 140hrs of work within an industry partner of their choice. In addition, the student will produce the following pieces of assessment:

    Introductory Video:

    A short video (less than 5 mins) introducing themselves and providing information on the host organisation and the project that will be undertaken during the work placement. During the video, students should also include a brief statement on what they are hoping to learn from the experience.

    Technical report or Diary:
    A technical report, portfolio OR diary of tasks undertaken (as required by their discipline). If the student is required to prepare a technical report/portfolio, PowerPoint presentation or equivalent as part of the placement, they can submit the work done for this assessment task. Otherwise, students should keep a technical diary that lists the specific tasks, equipment, and/or technical skills they have undertaken during their placement. Approximate length 1500-2000 words.

    Personal Reflection:

    Personal reflection outlining the non-technical skills practiced and/or acquired during their placement and how the experience has impacted on them and their intended career path. The document should outline their perceived strengths and what areas they can improve on in the future. Approx length 1000-1500 words.

    Host Feedback:
    The supervisor from the host organisation will also be asked to provide feedback on the student. This will be managed by the internship team and does not require input form the student. Where approved by the host, this feedback will be provided to the student through MyUni
    Submission
    All assessment components must be submitted online, marked and feedback returned through MyUni.
