ENGL 2079 - European Stories

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2023

Co-taught in English by Faculty in the Department of European Languages, and Linguistics, this course serves as an introduction to storytelling modalities within Europe. The aim will be to propose an itinerary through different geographical and socio-cultural spaces, and to introduce students to the issues associated with the study of texts from these spaces. Based on translated extracts from several works of Spanish, German and French literature, this course will address and explain some of the most and least known European stories. From folk tales to classic fictions, and through more alternative genres, a variety of personal and collective stories, past and present, will be highlighted, subtly reflecting the European polyphony. Via close readings and classroom discussions we examine the typical features of a wide range of stories and the recurring motifs and figures of the chosen genres, while also exploring its deep symbolic and mythological potential. We also examine story adaptations (in film, music etc.) and seek to understand why certain stories remain so captivating and influential.
