MDIA 7011 - Immersive Media Asset Generation

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2021

Without digital assets, immersive media content would not be immersive. Asset generation in this space can differ from other mediums, as robust optimisation is paramount to success. In this course, students will cover all aspects of asset creation/development for immersive media technologies ? everything from 3D modelling, photogrammetry, and texturing through to audio recording and sound design. Students will have the opportunity to become adept at using numerous industry standard software packages and platforms, as well as receiving guidance to experiment with their own artistic visions.

    1 Demonstrate development pipeline understanding in regard to core digital asset generation.
    2 Produce digital assets fit for immersive media technology platforms.
    3 Identify compatibility issues with digital asset generation.
    4 Synthesise immersive media design theory knowledge into practical output.
    5 Demonstrate technical knowledge across a variety of hardware and software platforms used for digital asset development.

  • Learning Resources
    Required Resources
    Due to the individual skill acquisition required, and the technical nature of the project material in this course, resources will be provided weekly for students. These resources will be in the form of current immersive design research, applied techniques, video screencasts and websites. Students are not only encouraged to access all resources provided, but also to foster an investigative research approach to obtaining their own resources as needs arise.

    Due to the quickly evolving nature of immersive technologies, students will be provided with resources and readings over the duration of the course. Students are also encouraged to foster an investigative research approach towards resource acquisition depending on assignment focus
    Online Learning
    This course makes extensive use of MyUni and external websites. All assignments are submitted via online methods. Due to the size of data required for immersive media development, it is also strongly encouraged that students have access to large personal storage devices.
  • Learning & Teaching Activities
    Learning & Teaching Modes
    Lectures for this course are recorded and then uploaded into the university’s Echo 360 system. Tutorials and/or workshops are held in either a dedicated space or within the Napier building VR lab. Readings and other materials are provided using the Barr Smith Library Digital Resources Management Service or through externally hosted websites. Assignments and course participation may involve a mixture of individual and collaborative work.

    Small Group Discovery Experience
    Tutorial sessions held in the dedicated spaces and VR labs form an integral part of learning in this course. Students will gain SGDE by working in a combination of whole class and smaller groups under the guidance and supervision of the Course Coordinator and academic staff. Tutorial sessions also provide an opportunity for students to receive advice and support from the academic staff coordinating the course as they complete project work.

    Online Quizzes and Group Activities: 25% The quizzes will represent summative understanding of the core concepts and terminology presented in lectures and tutorial sessions. Online group activities will consist of pipeline replication and pipeline comprehension. (2000 words equiv.)

    Practical Assignment 1: 30%  Practical Assignment 1 demonstrates deep software knowledge and deep understanding of all types of asset design and development though dedicated software usage submission. (3000 words equiv.)

    Practical Assignment 2: 45%  Practical Assignment 2 represents the culmination of asset generation and pipeline work. Students will submit their asset collections within an immersive scene as per the techniques and design principles outlined. Grades will be awarded based on how well assets are built, the design methodologies implemented, and demonstrated understanding of export and import methodology. (4000 words equiv.)
