This course is concerned with the craft of scholarly research and writing in the field of law. Topics include the elements, ethics, and everyday life of a major research project; theoretical approaches to the study of law (and how these shape a project); techniques of reading and writing; the practice of giving and receiving feedback; and the purposes and politics of the university and an (inter)disciplinary training in law. The course is assessed through the development and peer review of a research proposal.

    On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
    1. Analyse the principles of their chosen thesis topic in law, undertake legal research at an advanced level with primary and secondary materials, and evaluate complex legal information.
    2. Apply advanced and integrated knowledge of the law to complex issues, and critically evaluate the operation of the law from theoretical and practical perspectives.
    3. Structure and sustain coherent extended written arguments for a sophisticated legal audience, orally communicate complex legal concepts effectively, and critique advanced legal research from substantive and structural perspectives.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    Learning and Teaching Activities amounting to 24 hours will be offered to students in this course.

    The course will be taught in-person and it is expected that you will be in class for each session. The course is designed to be interactive and requires you to be present and engaged in each session. The expectation is that you will come prepared to each session, having completed the pre-sessional readings and exercises.
    Workload

    The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

    Students are expected to devote 156 hours in total to this course, comprising 24 hours of in-person classes and the remaining time on preparation for classes, reflection and preparation of assessment.

  • Assessment

    Assessment Detail
    Further information on each of the components of the assessment is provided on MyUni. The assessment tasks will also be explained during the first class.
    Submission
    Late Submission: 5% of the total mark possible will be deducted for every 24 hours or part thereof that it is late, including each day of the weekend.  For example, an essay that is submitted after the due date and time but within the first 24 hour period, and that has been graded at 63%, will have 5% deducted, for a final grade of 58%. An essay that is more than 24 hours late will lose 10%, etc. 

    Word Length: Assignments which exceed the allocated length will be subject to a penalty of 5% of total marks possible per 100 words or part thereof (i.e. with a word limit of 3000, an essay graded 63% will have 5% deducted if it is 3001 words long, for a final grade of 58%, 10% if it is 3101 words long, etc). Words are calculated including all footnotes and headings within the text. Quotations and all referencing information are included in the word count.

    SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design.     The course is constantly being updated and revised to reflect the evolution of the law, to respond to student feedback, and to engage with the latest teaching practices.     Lex Salus (law and wellbeing) is an initiative of the Adelaide Law School aimed at destigmatising mental health issues; promoting physical, mental and emotional wellness; building a strong community of staff and students; and celebrating diversity within the school. It also seeks to promote wellness within the legal profession, through the involvement of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South 最新糖心Vlog, the Honourable Chris Kourakis, as the official Patron of the program.
