Topics include: Laplace and z transforms for CT and DT systems; Transfer functions and impulse responses; Stability; Dynamic and steady-state performance; Root locus diagrams; Bode plots; Cascade compensation using root locus and frequency response techniques. Introduction to state-space modelling and analysis. Analysis and design of digital control systems.

    On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

     
    1 Analyse closed-loop control systems for stability and steady-state performance.
    2 Design a closed-loop control system to satisfy dynamic performance specifications using frequency response, root-locus, and state-space techniques, as well as steady state error specifications.
    3 Apply all concepts to continuous and discrete time systems.
    4 Apply and test dynamic system models and control designs in Matlab.
    5 Complete system identification and compensation of a real feedback system in the laboratory.

    This course has a hurdle requirement. Meeting the specified hurdle criteria is a requirement for passing the course.


    Due to the current COVID-19 situation modified arrangements have been made to assessments to facilitate remote learning and teaching. Assessment details provided here reflect recent updates.

    The two class tests will be replaced by on-line tests. These are formative assessments and you will be given several hours to work on your tests before uploading your solutions to MyUni. I will advise you of details next week. I am still planning to have the first test in week 5. Each test will be worth 10% of total assessment.

    There will be a "practical" delivered on-line towards the end of the semester. Unfortunately, the original prac involved lab equipment which won't be available on-line. So we will be doing a different prac. You'll be advised of details well in advance. You will require access to matlab (including the control toolbox). The prac will be worth 25% of total assessment.

    There are going to be time slots developed for an on-line examination to be held at the end of the semester. I will provide you with details as they come to hand. This will obviously be an open book exam but the usual rules around academic honesty will apply and will be policed. The final exam is worth 55%. I am removing the hurdle requirement for the final exam. It is a requirement that the Masters course (ELEC ENG 7082) contains additional material compared to the undergrad course (ELECENG 3101). So the exams for Masters and undergrad will be slightly different as has been the case in past years.
