ENGL 3050 - Ways of Reading

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2020

This course is the capstone for the English major. It is designed to consolidate and extend students' understanding of textual forms and approaches to literary studies through a focus on ways of reading in the study of English. Textual forms that students will encounter include poetry, short fiction, drama, the novel, and life writing. Students will encounter and have the opportunity to practise some of the major established and emergent ways of reading in the discipline, including close reading, psychoanalytic reading, deconstructive reading, feminist and queer reading, affective reading, and environmental criticism. The course will enhance students' capacities in academic literacies and research skills; provide opportunities for both teamwork and independent research; develop critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills; and develop `self-initiated? research skills.
