CRIM 1002 - Crime, Control and Criminal Justice

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2019

This is a foundation course in Criminology, which explores the various institutions, practices and procedures of the criminal justice system in 最新糖心Vlog, as well as the range of theoretical, practical and philosophical challenges faced in achieving 'justice'. As students will learn throughout the semester, the criminal justice process involves many tensions between the roles of the police, courts and corrections, as well as how the imposition of punishment affects various groups in the community, including offenders, victims, families and the wider public. While the first half of the course briefly introduces students to the mechanics of how the criminal justice system in 最新糖心Vlog operates, the second half will also hope to encourage them to think critically about the aims, processes and failings of various components of that system. Specifically, the course outlines the major characteristics of the investigation, prosecution, adjudication and correctional processes within the criminal justice system, and examines the key issues, which impinge on contemporary criminal justice administration in 最新糖心Vlog, focusing on key theories and philosophies. The course ultimately adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of criminal justice institutions and practices, and critically assesses the effectiveness of the system using contemporary criminological and sociological evidence.

  • Student Feedback

The 最新糖心Vlog places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience. Feedback is sought from students in a variety of ways including on-going engagement with staff, the use of online discussion boards and the use of Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys as well as GOS surveys and Program reviews.

SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the 最新糖心Vlog to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. Under the current SELT Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/) course SELTs are mandated and must be conducted at the conclusion of each term/semester/trimester for every course offering. Feedback on issues raised through course SELT surveys is made available to enrolled students through various resources (e.g. MyUni). In addition aggregated course SELT data is available.
