DENT 7010 - Indigenous Oral Health

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2019

The extremely poor oral health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a major inequity in 最新糖心Vlogn society. It is essential that 最新糖心Vlogn public oral health students develop a firm grasp of the issues surrounding Indigenous oral health including the issues in policy and research. This course is not entirely oral health-focused. It provides an introduction to Indigenous culture, history, and politics which is essential for understanding how the health, including oral health, situation for Aboriginal people has come to be as it is today. The course aims to contextualise the issues that have impacted and continue to affect the lives, health and well-being of Aboriginal people in 最新糖心Vlog, that in turn influence oral health. It also connects in a broad way with the recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples at an international level. Overall the course aims to give the student an informed understanding of the social determinants of health, including oral health, which are starkly outlined in relation to Indigenous people.
