MEDICINE 4301A - Honours Medicine Research Skills Part 1

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2016

The course information on this page is being finalised for 2016. Please check again before classes commence.

This course aims to help students develop the broad skills necessary to succeed in a career in science. It runs in parallel with the Honours Medicine Research Project course. The course includes a series of tutorial-style 'resource sessions' on topics that include laboratory procedures and safety issues, principles of human and animal research ethics, library resources and searching the electronic literature, practical statistics, and presentation skills. Students are assessed in their application of these skills to the critical review of a scientific manuscript, and to their Honours research project. The workload for this course involves approximately 10 hours attendance at resource sessions and approximately 20 hours preparing for and delivering the critical review exercise; however, application of the research skills to the student's research project, including discussions with the supervisor(s), represents a substantial additional time commitment.
