North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2015

Contains an extensive study of chordal harmony, scales/modes and their relationships within advanced jazz compositions and improvisations. Tuning systems are investigated and the advantages of Equal Temperament over other systems discussed. Advanced Harmonic Substitution principles and applications including reharmonisation and Chordally Based Chromaticism are discussed. Inner Voices, Line Progressions and Poly Chords are examined and examples provided. The `Standard' in jazz repertoire will be defined - students will research a large number of `Standard' tunes and categorise them into harmonic progression tendency groupings within their investigative study. Examples and practice of Aural recognition of harmonic progression will also be provided.

    Essential jazz theory topics are presented/explained within weekly jazz theory lectures of 1 hour duration. Application and further discussion of these topics occurs in weekly tutorial sessions, where assignments and exercises are also presented.

    A detailed cover sheet for this assignment will be provided in week 4. You will conduct an extensive study of jazz standard repertoire, categorising a minimum of 200 tunes according to their harmonic tendencies. You will also write an essay of 1500 – 2000 words, discussing these harmonic tendencies and your findings from the study. 15% 1, 2, 4

    Examination The examination will consist of questions relating to the content discussed during the lecture series and its application, including aspects of the Standards Study. Date and venue to be advised. 70% 1, 2, 3
    Rationale for assessment: Ongoing assignments within jazz theory apply the fundamentals delivered within the seminar, requiring students to research topics and exercise the techniques discussed. They are marked and returned to students, providing critical feedback (Learning Objectives 1, 2, 3,& 4). The theory examination comprises a formal written paper and assesses knowledge and application of theory topics taught and discussed (Learning Objectives 1, 2, 3 & 5).
