NURSING 1008 - Professional & Ethical Nursing Practice Considerations

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2019

The course will complement student learning from Communication and Professional Nursing with integration of knowledge, attitudes and skills required for practice. The principles of professional practice such as autonomy and advocacy will be considered and where possible students will be encouraged to consider their clinical placement experiences against a reflective framework. Students will be introduced to the challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their health care. The factors that need to be considered in caring for people with diverse cultures will also be explored. Students will be exposed to the impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATODS) on the 最新糖心Vlogn population. Students will also begin a comprehensive and integrated approach to the care of people with mental health disorders, a national health priority. Lecture content will be supported with group work exercises and workshops for developing skills in de-escalation and beginning to perform a mental health first aid assessment.

Learning & Teaching Modes

Face to face lectures – Face to face lectures offer synchronous learning opportunities and enable students to quickly clarify complex descriptions and terminology. Much of the content for this course is supported by textbooks with web page and e-learning supports. The Adelaide Nursing School supports the audio and video capture of lecture content as an aid to revision.

Interactive tutorials – The essential nature of teamwork and communication in nursing and health care is emphasised through interactive tutorials. The four key tutorial sessions will consider the legal implications within nursing and ethical dilemmas, the skills required for recognising and responding to challenging behaviours, developing and reflecting on communication skills required for patients and carers while on Clinical Placement, recognising and responding to a person requiring mental health first aid and exploring communication skills for use in the multi-disciplinary team.

Tutorials

There will be four (4) Compulsory Tutorial session for each student this semester. Allocation into the Tutorial groups will occur at the beginning of the semester by the Course Coordinator and attendance at all allocated tutorial sessions is compulsory to give students the best possible opportunity to achieve success in all their assessment items.

Assessment Detail

FORMATIVE QUIZ:
Within this quiz students will be required to successfully complete a quiz revising the legal concepts from C&PN in Semester 1 that will be relevant when discussing ethical situations during this course.

ASSESSMENT 1: Personal Attribute Reflective Essay
At the completion of the first tutorial session students will be asked to prepare a reflective essay as a response to the following topic:脗聽"Identify a personal attribute which has the potential to negatively affect your ability to practice well as a nursing professional. Identify and describe three strategies you can undertake to achieve progress in this area".

ASSESSMENT 2: Group Cultural Guide
During the second tutorial session student will form into groups to work as a team to research and create a "Cultural Guide PowerPoint" for a group of their choice. This resource will be shared with the entire cohort with permission of the authors.

ASSESSMENT 3: Tutorial Activities
Students are expected to participate in a total of four tutorial sessions to engage in a series of activities and to contribute to the discussion.

ASSESSMENT 4: Reflective Essay
This Reflective Essay is in line with the NMBA requirements for our Professional Competencies an important aspect of ongoing learning is exploring the impact of the students experiences during this semester on their ongoing development for professional practice and any positive impacts or possible further opportunities to develop. Students will be asked to脗聽consider three elements of the semesters content and describe how this has assisted thier understanding of the topic in the context of nursing and how the learning experience will have an impact to your future practice.

Student Feedback

Feedback is sought from students in a variety of ways including on-going engagement with staff, the use of online discussion boards and the use of Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys as well as GOS surveys and Program reviews.

SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the 最新糖心Vlog to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. Under the current SELT Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/) course SELTs are mandated and must be conducted at the conclusion of each term/semester/trimester for every course offering. Feedback on issues raised through course SELT surveys is made available to enrolled students through various resources (e.g. MyUni). In addition aggregated course SELT data is available.

Past Selt feedback has resulted in the restructure of tutorials for Professional & Ethical Nursing Practice Considerations. Firstly they were made to be longer so more activities can be undertaken and secondly the number of students in each session was reduced to promote better interaction. Another change instigated along with this restructure was a smaller venue with materials available to interactive group work which again allowed group activities and open discussion that had previously be difficult to manage in a larger lecture hall. The restructure provided an opportunity to introduce preparation work that would clarify objectives for the course assessments.
Feedback from subsequent Selts indicated the success of the smaller groups, and highlighted the benefit of the preparation activities, but it also highlighted the need regarding clarification of technology used within the course to assist learning. This resulted in guides being developed for new technology with step by step instructions for students to refer to throughout the semester. A series of modified assessment tasks that allowed more guidance and feedback prior to the major assessment were also developed.
