DENT 6101EX - Oral Appliances in Sleep Disordered Breathing

External - Semester 2 - 2014

This course will give students a comprehensive understanding of the history of oral appliance therapy for treatment of sleep-disordered breathing. It will introduce the relationship between medical and dental disciplines in this treatment. Evidence-based protocols and current treatment paradigms will be explored in detail and the student will complete the course with the skills to make informed treatment choices for patients, and explore the range of oral appliances, their fabrication and use. The current evidence-based treatment protocols will be presented in a cohesive form structured against the stepwise treatment of patients. It will include pre-treatment, monitoring and medical liaison. Guidelines for the scope and extent of dentist participation in treatment of sleep-disordered breathing will be presented as will the basic legal requirements of the dentist. At the completion of the course students will have the skills to select appropriate appliance options for patients and have a comprehensive understanding of their indications and contra-indications for treatment.

    Online quiz x 6 (60%) – at the end of each module students will complete an online quiz.  The quizzes will use a variety of question formats – MCQ, SBA, extending matching questions and short written answers.

    End of course exam (40%) – short answer and essay-style answers to questions.

    Tutorial x 6 (formative assessment) – students will explore a variety of areas relating to the selection and use of oral appliances for the management of sleep disordered breathing.  Each tutorial paper will require students to respond to several short answer questions or write a short essay on a topic ready for group discussion online.
