This course provides the clinician with the specialty-focused skills and knowledge to function as an advanced anaesthetic and postanaesthesia recovery nurse within the perioperative environment. The course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired along the patient's perioperative pathway and how these are applied to the numerous subspecialities of surgery and the implications on anaesthesia and postanaesthesia recovery nursing practice. The course examines and investigates the advanced knowledge and skills required to competently manage these patients. Advanced assessment and clinical intervention skills are demonstrated and are reinforced within the student's clinical environment. The completion of this course will enable the clinician to function at an advanced clinical level within all areas of anaesthetic and recovery nursing.

Learning & Teaching Modes

This course will be delivered through flexible delivery mode with Online Classroom contact.
Lectures and tutorials via the Online Classroom will be utilised to discuss the content for the week and to discuss how students would apply the knowledge into their clinical practice setting.

Workload

The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

It is expected that you will need to invest about 24 hours per week of study to successfully complete this course. This includes all study activities, virtual classrooms, readings and assessment. Thus some weeks it will be more and others less. It is recommended that you plan your time commitment to the course at the beginning of the semester.

Learning Activities Summary

Overview
Within each week, the specific anaesthetic and post anaesthetic recovery sub speciality concerns will be presented. These concerns will address the key points (including relevant assessment & clinical management) for the sub specialities, and will build upon the knowledge & skill from ‘Introduction to Anaesthetic & Recovery Practice’

Weekly lectures/tutorials via OC, self-directed reading and learning, clinical placement (minimum 4 weeks in each speciality area) and clinical skills workbook.

Week 3. Renal & Urological surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice
Week 4. ENT, Head & neck surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice
Week 5. Ophthalmological surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice
Week 6. Orthopaedic surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice
Week 7. Vascular surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice
Week 8. Cardiothoracic surgery anaesthesia & recovery practice

Assessment Related Requirements

The clinical skills workbook requires students to spend a minimum amount of time (4 weeks minimum in each area) in both (Anaesthetics and Recovery) speciality areas, in order to gain skills to competently practice at an advanced level across these areas.

Assessment Detail

Cast Study Plan Formative Assessment (500 words) – 0%
Students are expected to choose a patient and provide a rough plan of the case study outlining the key points to be discussed.
This assessment is scheduled early in the semester to assist in the planning and development of the case study, and allows the student to receive feedback prior to completion of the final assignment.
As this is a formative assessment there is no grade attached to this assessment piece. It does however allow the student to receive feedback on their academic writing, and allows them to develop their skills required for successful completion of further assessments.

Case Study (2500 words) – 40%
Building on from the case study plan each student is required to complete a case study of high academic standard. Case studies allow clinical episodes and practices to be articulated and explored.

Poster (200 word equivalence) – 30%
The poster must be on a clinical procedure covered within this semester’s lecture/tutorial program. The information must be presented as a poster.

Learning Portfolio (2000 words) – 30%
Students are expected to submit a portfolio of activities chosen from the surgical specialities from within the 12 weeks of the course.

Clinical Skills Handbook – Non-graded Pass/Fail
Continuing on from ‘Introduction to Anaesthetics and Recovery Nursing’, this is a non-graded assessment, the handbook enables students to keep a record of their clinical skills practiced and developed during their clinical component within the Graduate Diploma. This must be completed by the end of this course.

Late submission of work
Late submission without an approved extension will be penalised at the rate of 10% of available marks for each day after the due date. Work submitted more than 10 days after the due date may be returned unmarked. This action will be taken to prevent students who do get their work in on time being disadvantaged.

Word limit
You are advised to comply with word limits. You are, of course, not expected to achieve exactly the required length and a 10% leeway on either side is acceptable. However a penalty of 5% of available marks will apply for word limit of the 10% leeway.
