NURSING 7115 - Specialised Anaesthetic & Recovery Nursing

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2014

This course provides the clinician with the specialty-focused skills and knowledge to function as an advanced anaesthetic and postanaesthesia recovery nurse within the perioperative environment. The course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired along the patient's perioperative pathway and how these are applied to the numerous subspecialities of surgery and the implications on anaesthesia and postanaesthesia recovery nursing practice. The course examines and investigates the advanced knowledge and skills required to competently manage these patients. Advanced assessment and clinical intervention skills are demonstrated and are reinforced within the student's clinical environment. The completion of this course will enable the clinician to function at an advanced clinical level within all areas of anaesthetic and recovery nursing.

    3. Assessment practices must be fair and equitable to students and give them the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
    4. Assessment must maintain academic standards.

    Assessment Summary
Assessment Task Assessment Type Weighting Learning Outcome(s) being addressed
    Case Study Plan Formative (500 words) 0% 1-4, 6-8, 10
    Learning Portfolio Summative/Formative (2000 words) 30% 1-4, 7, 8, 10
    Case Study Summative (2500 words) 40% 1-4, 6-8, 10

    Clinical Skills Handbook Non-Graded Pass Non-Graded Pass/Fail 3-5, 8-10
    Assessment Related Requirements
The clinical skills workbook requires students to spend a minimum amount of time (4 weeks minimum in each area) in both (Anaesthetics and Recovery) speciality areas, in order to gain skills to competently practice at an advanced level across these areas.
    Assessment Detail
Cast Study Plan Formative Assessment (500 words) – 0%
Students are expected to choose a patient and provide a rough plan of the case study outlining the key points to be discussed.
This assessment is scheduled early in the semester to assist in the planning and development of the case study, and allows the student to receive feedback prior to completion of the final assignment.
As this is a formative assessment there is no grade attached to this assessment piece. It does however allow the student to receive feedback on their academic writing, and allows them to develop their skills required for successful completion of further assessments.

    Case Study  (2500 words) – 40%
Building on from the case study plan each student is required to complete a case study of high academic standard. Case studies allow clinical episodes and practices to be articulated and explored.

    Poster (200 word equivalence) – 30%
The poster must be on a clinical procedure covered within this semester’s lecture/tutorial program. The information must be presented as a poster.

    Learning Portfolio (2000 words) – 30%
Students are expected to submit a portfolio of activities chosen from the surgical specialities from within the 12 weeks of the course.

    Clinical Skills Handbook – Non-graded Pass/Fail
Continuing on from ‘Introduction to Anaesthetics and Recovery Nursing’, this is a non-graded assessment, the handbook enables students to keep a record of their clinical skills practiced and developed during their clinical component within the Graduate Diploma. This must be completed by the end of this course.
    Submission
Assessments, unless otherwise stated in your Study guide, are to be submitted electronically via Assignments in MyUni on the due date identified in this Study guide.
Instructions for assignment submission are available for all students under Tutorials at www.adelaide.edu.au/myuni/.
An Assignment Coversheet must be submitted with each assessment. The coversheet should be the first page of your assessment. A word version of the Assignment Coversheet is available to download at www.health.adelaide.edu.au/nursing/students/resources. The Plagiarism Statement must be signed and dated for
your assessment to be marked (please note the details stated on the Assignment Coversheet).
More information on avoiding Plagiarism is available at www.adelaide.edu.au/clpd/plagiarism/

    Using Turnitin

Most assessments for this course will be submitted via Turnitin in MyUni.
Turnitin is an electronic program that enables students to check that they are referencing correctly.
It also enables more efficient feedback as assignments submitted via Turnitin are assessed using an online process
Please refer to your study guide for assessment details and the information below about Turnitin

All assessments should be submitted by the specified due date.

    Late submission of work
Late submission without an approved extension will be penalised at the rate of 10% of available marks for each day after the due date. Work submitted more than 10 days after the due date may be returned unmarked. This action will be taken to prevent students who do get their work in on time being disadvantaged.

    Word limit
You are advised to comply with word limits. You are, of course, not expected to achieve exactly the required length and a 10% leeway on either side is acceptable. However a penalty of 5% of available marks will apply for word limit of the 10% leeway.

If you have difficulty submitting your assignment, you can call the MyUni helpdesk from 8am to 6pm 08 8303 3335.

  • Student Feedback

The 最新糖心Vlog places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience. Feedback is sought from students in a variety of ways including on-going engagement with staff, the use of online discussion boards and the use of Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys as well as GOS surveys and Program reviews.

SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the 最新糖心Vlog to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. Under the current SELT Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/) course SELTs are mandated and must be conducted at the conclusion of each term/semester/trimester for every course offering. Feedback on issues raised through course SELT surveys is made available to enrolled students through various resources (e.g. MyUni). In addition aggregated course SELT data is available.

  • Student Support
    eSELTs

The evaluation of learning and teaching processes and practices is essential to enable the School and individual teaching staff to continue to improve student learning outcomes, with an emphasis on student centred learning. While Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) is only one source of information used to evaluate learning and teaching effectiveness, we consider your responses to be very valuable in the continued development of our programs.
  • Policies & Guidelines
  • Fraud Awareness

Students are reminded that in order to maintain the academic integrity of all programs and courses, the university has a zero-tolerance approach to students offering money or significant value goods or services to any staff member who is involved in their teaching or assessment. Students offering lecturers or tutors or professional staff anything more than a small token of appreciation is totally unacceptable, in any circumstances. Staff members are obliged to report all such incidents to their supervisor/manager, who will refer them for action under the university's student鈥檚 disciplinary procedures.
