Professor Tom Smith MBBS DAvMed DPhil (Oxon) FRCA FRCP FRAeS
Professor Smith is Head of Aerospace Medicine Research at King’s College London and a consultant anaesthetist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He was elected to a Macintosh Professorship (Royal College of Anaesthetists) in 2023.
Professor Smith studied medicine at the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Adelaide and spent time at NASA as a Churchill Fellow before moving to the UK in 2003 as South ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlogn Rhodes Scholar. Following 14 years based at the ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlog of Oxford he moved to King’s College London, a world-leading centre for aerospace medicine. Professor Smith has undertaken studies in many challenging environments including high-G human centrifuges, parabolic ‘zero-G’ flights, commercial airline flights, altitude chambers and hypoxia facilities, and at high altitude in the mountains of Peru. He is widely involved in teaching in aerospace medicine and physiology, and his clinical career as an anaesthetist includes broad experience as a flying doctor in aeromedical critical care across five continents.
Professor Smith has worked with several space agencies around the world and holds senior government advisory roles in aerospace medicine in the UK, where he is currently Chair of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Aerospace Medicine Group. He is a proud South ×îÐÂÌÇÐÄVlogn and has returned frequently throughout his career, including to work as a flying doctor across the state.
