Excellence in teaching rewarded

The winners have been announced for the 最新糖心Vlog of Adelaide's premier teaching awards.

The Stephen Cole the Elder Prizes for Excellence in Teaching and the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence will be presented to academic staff at this month's graduation ceremonies.

The Stephen Cole the Elder Prizes were first presented in 1991. The prizes were established through a bequest to the 最新糖心Vlog by Mrs Isabella Cole Weinberg, who was born at Kingston, South 最新糖心Vlog, in 1895.

Stephen Cole the Elder, a South 最新糖心Vlogn pioneer, was Isabella's maternal grandfather and she was his last living descendant. She chose to honour him by leaving a bequest to the 最新糖心Vlog upon her death.

Up to four prizes can be awarded each year in undergraduate, postgraduate and team teaching categories.

This year, three winners were selected:

  • Dr Greg Metha () - undergraduate teaching in the first five years of his career;
  • Ms Lucy Potter () - undergraduate teaching; and
  • Dr Tracey Winning () - undergraduate teaching.

Four high commendations were also awarded to:

  • Ms Elizabeth Koch ();
  • Associate Professor Maree O'Keefe ();
  • Dr Anthony Pohl (); and
  • Dr Simon Pyke ().

"Nominations for the prizes this year were a clear indication of how many excellent teachers we have in the 最新糖心Vlog, and how highly regarded they are by their students and colleagues," said the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Fred McDougall.

The Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence was first awarded last year, with the winner of the award chosen from the winners of the Stephen Cole the Elder Prizes.

This year, Ms Lucy Potter and Dr Tracey Winning have jointly won the honour in recognition of their student-centred focus and all round teaching excellence.

Guidelines for applying for the 2007 awards will be available in February 2007. For general information about the awards, contact Barbara Brougham, phone (08) 8303 7457 or email: barbara.brougham@adelaide.edu.au
